Playing the Piano – Ashwin Sundhararajan

I started playing the Piano when I was 4 years old and love it! It helps me stay happy. Whenever I am in a bad mood, once I start playing, I start enjoying the music, it calms me down and I slowly forget about the bad mood and feel happy again. This is what I feel music can do to you.

When I listen to the pieces, I catch some tunes and enjoy playing them repeatedly till I get it right and it becomes natural to me. Due to this, I feel that I can play things just by listening, and that makes me happy. However, I like to practice more so that my skills increase.

I enjoy playing and listening to all genres but Western Classical is my favourite. Similarly, I enjoy listening to many composers like Beethoven, Chopin, Bach, Mozart, etc but I like Bach the most. The first piece I learnt was Für Elise, by Beethoven, but that was an easy version. I, later on, learnt the actual version, and I felt proud that I could play it!

Some of my favourite compositions are Toccatina and Fugue in D minor by Bach, Moonlight Sonata 3rd movement by Beethoven, and Sonatina in C by Mozart. I also like listening to some fun songs like Czardas by Vittori Monti, Clowns by Dimitry Kabalevsky and William Teel Overture by Rossini. I try to learn these songs and perform some of them in concerts. My dream is to be able to play some of the most difficult pieces ever composed like Hungarian Rhapsody 2nd by Liszt and perform them on stage. I also like composing my own music with my teacher and it is great fun!

To sum it up, I like to listen to music, play music, and most of all, I am happy while playing the Piano.
